What's New in SAIL?

  • Become a Sailing Instructor: SAIL is again sponsoring a US SAILING Level 1 Small Boat Sailing Instructor Course. Click here from more information.
  • Pay your SAIL dues; re-join for 2009: SAIL memberships are valid only for a calendar year. If you haven't paid your 2009 dues, you're not a member now. Adults, go here to see a printable membership form which you can fill out and mail in with your check. Juniors, your form is here. Membership in SAIL helps the sport of sailing in the Rocky Mountain region and gives you individual benefits too. SAIL's only revenue stream is membership dues.
     
  • Carrie Howe Kids' Clinic: On April 5, 2009 from 11:00 to 2:00 at Cherry Creek Reservoir, Carrie Howe Olympic & world champion sailor conducted a free sailing clinic for children ages 8-17 sponsored by Community Sailing Foundation. Despite the chilly weather, the clinic was attended by about 30 youths, inspired by Carrie's enthusiasm.   More information at admin@communitysailng.org
  • Colorado Coconuts' Sanity: It’s here!  YOU are invited to one of the biggest sailing events ever to hit the Denver area, the World Premier of Colorado Coconuts' newest sailing movie, Sanity on April 8th at Teikyo Loretto Heights (Little) Theater.
    • Come at 6:00 for the live band, The Truth of the Matter. The movie follows at 7:00 pm, features regattas on the seven lakes that made up the 2008 SAIL Keelboat & PHRF Tours and will run for a little over an hour.  The event is free but donations will be accepted to help offset costs of producing the movie. 
    • Clubs hosting 2009 SAIL Tour regattas will provide short descriptions of their clubs & regatta plans and hand out fliers. 
    • A limited number of autographed movies will be available for sale; bring your 2009 PHRF certificate and get a discount on the movie.
    • This will all take place in the Little Theater which is located directly below the Chapel.  The Chapel is just to the right of the Administration Building when Federal Blvd is to your back.  Teikyo Loretto Heights University is located at 3001 S Federal Blvd, Denver 80236.   • SAIL Winter Sailing Seminars: Once again it’s time for the SAIL Winter Sailing Seminars!   We have events planned for February, March, and April so please take a look at what’s planned and join us.  All of the events are free to SAIL members but if you are not a member you can join at the event for just $15.
    • The first seminar for 2009, on Wednesday, February 11th, featured the incredible Tom Downing explaining & clarifying the 2009 changes to the Racing Rules of SailingThe event was upstairs at the original Brooklyn's located at 2644 W. Colfax in Denver from 7:00 until 9:00 PM. The room was full of racers looking for that extra edge in their first race of 2009. Most came at 6:00 PM for dinner & drinks and a chance to visit with sailors from the area clubs.
    • On March 11, Salty Dogs Sailing Club will present a program on cruising.
    • SAIL will host an Open House for the US Sailing Spring Meeting that is being held in Denver.  The event will be on Friday, March 27th at the Stapleton Doubletree Hotel from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM.  This is your chance to talk with the folks that make all of the decisions at US Sailing and let them know what you like and don’t like.  There will be hors-devours and a cash bar so please plan on joining us at the event.  There will be more information later. {The new Colorado Coconuts' movie on Rocky Mountain sailing will be premiered there.)

  • SAIL's Safety Program: SAIL has developed a "Sailing Safety" program, specifically targeted to sailors. It is being offered to member clubs at no to minimal cost. (Sail has invested in the development costs & will pay the instructor.) E-mail Commodore Ross for more information & to schedule a date for your club at your lake.
  • Community Sailing Gala: April 4, 2009, 6:30-10:00 PM, at Phipps Tennis Pavilion in Denver. The featured speaker is Carrie Howe, 2008 Olympian, ICSA All-American Sailor, graduate of Boston College and ranked #1 on the US Sailing Team in the Yngling class.   • SAIL's Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, Nov 1st, at Cherry Creek Meadows club house, from 10:00 to 1:30. Business accomplished
  • Colorado Governor's Cup was superbly hosted by DSA on September 13-14, 2008 at Cherry Creek Reservoir.
    • Saturday saw four races with enough wind to make spinnaker errors costly on the separate courses for dinghies & keelboats.  Sunday turned into a drifter, with no races started on either course.
    • 45 boats competed, 20 keelboats & 25 dinghies.
    • Competition within some fleets and for the keelboat Governor's Cup trophy was close, being decided by tie-breakers.
    • Tom Sweeney won the Keelboat Governor's Cup & David Spira (again) won the Dinghy Governor's Cup.

  • Junior Regattas: Colorado Sail & Yacht Club hosted a one-day regatta for juniors at Chatfield Reservoir on Saturday, July 12, 2008, & Denver Sailing Association hosted another excellent event at Cherry Creek on August 23. These will repeat and more are planned for 2009.
     
  • Keesling/Jackson win Fireball Nationals. Frank "Gorilla" Keesling & "Rockin' Robin" Jackson won the 2008 Fireball Nationals held on Lake Dillon in mid-June. Here's a picture of the winning form:

  • SAIL Team in Mallory Finals: Rio Grande Sailing Club's team of  J-24 sailors Larry Jesse, David Ampleford, Marty Stevenson, and Chuck Arasim represented Area F in the finals of the US SAILING Men's Championship (Mallory Cup) held on San Francisco Bay in September 2008.
  • SAIL Tour: On March 29, SAIL held a meeting of clubs and interested parties to consider what to do about declining participation in its season championships. Results from the survey at http://www.cattle-fax.org/ss/wsb.dll/simpson/sail_tour_survey.htm were the basis of the discussions. The longshort version: The Tours will continue in 2009; see the Notice of Series.
     
  • Sailing Instructor Course: SAIL's  US SAILING Level 1 Sailing Instructor Course on Cherry Creek at the end of May. Seven candidates took the 2008 course; 7 graduated. Look for the course again, May 28-31, 2009.

  • Tour Video Available: Randy and Lisa Shelton from Chatfield race in most of the events on the SAIL Tour. They also are excellent videographers, shoot while they race and have put together an exciting video called "Colorado Wind" which includes the 2007 tour races at Alcova, Aspen, Carter, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, and Dillon. To see it, go to the Cruising World website, http://www.cruisingworld.com, and then go to the top right of the home page where there is a tab for member videos.  Click on the tab and find Colorado Wind there. If you like what’s on the website, you can buy a much cleaner DVD version (color, clarity, sound) from Randy and Lisa for $10 plus postage.  Email them at randy@grcbuilders.com for more information.
     
  • Sailor overboard, drowns: On May 23, 2008 Bob Snare, a respected sailor, was on the foredeck of his boat at Cherry Creek Res. when a sudden gust of high wind caused him to go overboard.  He was not wearing a personal flotation device; when the crew got the boat back to him, he was no longer visible. His body was recovered that evening. The coroner has ruled his death due to accidental drowning.

To promote the sport of Sailing in the Rocky Mountain Area and encourage excellence in it. To represent US Sailing and to participate in US Sailing's annual National Championship by organizing Area championships and by ensuring excellence in race management and judging.

Our Profile

S.A.I.L is the regional sailing association for Colorado, New Mexico, western Nebraska and Wyoming . Strictly a volunteer operation, it is a 503c Colorado "Not for Profit" organization. Officers and volunteers receive no compensation other than good will and the satisfaction of helping the sport..

S.A.I.L. was formed in 1972 to provide a communication route with Colorado State Parks to help facilitate sailing clubs to organize sailing and sail racing events within the state.  Its role has broadened to include coordinating sailing event schedules & education & training.  It promotes & provides programs to promote & improve sailing in the greater Rocky Mountain region.
 

S.A.I.L. provides representation to sailors, clubs & fleets in its region  within US Sailing, the National Governing Body for the sport of Sailing.  It provides services to promote and encourage excellence in sailing.

SAIL works to promote and improve the sport of sailing.  Annual race management seminars upgrade the quality of racing. A series of four monthly seminars  in the winter and spring help sailors stay abreast of developments and improve their knowledge & skills.
