The Rinderle B scoring system -- a high-point system whose origins are hazy, but which has been used by the Gulf of Maine Racing Association -- was the starting point for development of the Chips Scoring System.. It's thought that the system was was devised in the early 1980s by a ‘Jim Rinderle of Marblehead’ with these goals:

Note that Rinderle awards no points for DNF, DNC or DSQ. While it may be argued that "trying should be rewarded", SAIL does not see this as a problem for its season Tour scoring. SAIL uses multi-race regatta places to score its season-long Tours, not individual races. The individual regattas' sailing instructions typically deal with "letter place" scores.
